This year Jan Philipp Gloger makes his Bayreuth Festival debut directing a new much-awaited production of Der fliegende Holländer.

Since 2007 Mr. Gloger has worked primarily as a drama director for Theater Augsburg, Deutsches Theater Berlin, Schauspiel Essen, State Theatre Mainz and Deutsches Schauspielhaus in Hamburg, among others, as well as for Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel in Munich, where he realized five productions during the artistic direction of Dieter Dorn.

With Mozart‘s Le nozze di Figaro at the Theater Augsburg he directed his first opera in 2010. This was followed by Händel’s Alcina at Semperoper in Dresden in 2011. In 2013 he will realize Idomeneo at Oper Frankfurt.

This new Holländer promises to be an exciting production that will no doubt challenge audiences' pre-conceived notions of this early Wagner opera. Christian Thielemann will conduct. Russian bass-baritone Yevgeny Nikitin, who was to have made his Bayreuth debut in the title role, has pulled out of the production amid a huge controversy. (see below)

Bass-baritone Yevgeny Nikitin (pictured above in an old photograph from his heavy metal days) has pulled out of the Bayreuth Festival when German Television exposed the fact that among the multiple tattoos on the singer's body, once upon a time there was an image of a Swastika inked there. He has been replaced by Bayreuth veteran Samuel Youn.
This year, for the first time, I will be attending the Bayreuth Festival in early August. I will be blogging from Bayreuth about the performances, as well as my experience as a first time attendee of the festival. Read my blog by going HERE.
